WIDER GAUTENG DAY TRIP🇿🇦

Date: 18 September 2021
Location: Zaagkuilsdrift, Kgomo-Kgomo, Rust de Winter, Mkhombo
Tour Leader: Justin Rhys Nicolau
Species: 120+

Brief Trip Report:

We had another successful Wider Gauteng day trip this weekend, heading out to Zaagkuilsdrift and Kgomo-Kgomo, which produced good looks at some of the arid specials like Cape Penduline Tit, Ashy Tit, Marico Sunbird, Great Sparrow, Yellow Canary, Southern Pied Babbler, Acacia Pied Barbet, Kalahari Scrub Robin, Black-faced and Violet-eared Waxbill, Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk and a real treat in the form of a male Grey-backed Sparrowlark which showed well on the floodplains. A few migrants have started trickling in, and hopefully the rains arrive soon and make for another cracking season for warblers and rallids.

We popped through to Rust De Winter, where we enjoyed a pair of Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Terrestrial Brownbul, Secretarybird, Grey Tit-flycatcher and a few woodland species before moving to Mkhombo Dam which was full of Fulvous Whistling Duck and the usual waterfowl, and looks promising this season. Wader numbers were picking up on the large mudflats too, and it won’t be long before a local rarity turns up here.

As always, if you’d like to join one of our regular day trips or have any further enquiries, our details are below.
